About
I saw a post from Bob W5UQ here on qrz.com in June 2022 about needing someone to repair amps at home. About 4 weeks later and a bunch of phone calls, I started Dit Dit Electronics. The business end was easier to set up than I expected. However, getting the workbench set up for repairs was met with disaster at every turn. I'm finally up and running but learning the amps is going slow.
I spent 8 years as a field service engineer for a company near Pittsburgh that made broadcast television transmitters. I did installations, service and repair. During that time, I spent 2 years working in New York city on a microwave hand held TV receiver project. I installed about 50 of the 75 rooftop transmitters. The system worked, but the customer couldn't get enough investors for a nationwide rollout before cell phones and mobile internet took off. I've worked on both analog and digital (ATSC and DVB) from 10W to 100KW, both tubes (IOT) and solid state. Our digital ATSC modulator had about 5 or 6 boards all running different processors and operating systems. I've updated firmware and software for all of them. I've also worked at a defense contractor building power distribution systems for the US Navy, and troubleshooting guidance hardware for torpedoes. I was a certified soldering instructor (J-STD-001). I've hand soldered 0204 SMD parts up to 6" rigid copper line for transmitters. My day job is at the maintenance department at a local state park. If the repair business takes off, it will be my full time job. I enjoy building and repairing more than operating. In the early 90's, I was a member of W3KWH Steel City ARC, we typically placed top 10 in a lot of the V/UHF/Microwave contests. The one time I'm guaranteed to be on the air is in October for the PA QSO party. My wife Laurie got her Technician over the winter and chose N3DIT for a vanity call. She enjoys POTA and SOTA operating but uses my call since 10 Meters and up around here is scarce. The hilltop in the background of my picture is W3/PT-004, Laurel Hill, in Ohiopyle State Park. |
